Disappearing 9-patch quilt for Valentine’s Day

FullSizeRender.jpeg

Make this fun, easy heart quilt from rectangles and squares. This is not my original pattern. I saw it in a magazine once, but I can’t find it, so I reproduced what I could remember, as I’ve made this design a few times for doll quilts, basket liners, and quick gifts.

Friends, it took a very long time for the pictures to load tonight. I think the internet is blowing in the wind. But, for those who asked on Instagram, here are the pictures and I promise I’ll write out full instructions tomorrow.

To get you started, I cut 4 different medium prints - 7x6.5” and cut those in half to make 8 - 3.5x6.5” rectangles.
Light background, can be scrappy, solid or one print - Cut 8 - 3.5” squares and 16 - 2” squares.
Draw a line diagonally on the wrong side of all the squares.
Make the hearts first. Mix and match your prints. I wasn’t paying attention and I meant to position my hearts differently! That’s okay. That’s the fun of impromptu quilt projects.

Now, your heart squares should be 6.5”. Cut 5 - 6.5” squares for the main sashing, and 1 - 6.5” square contrast.

Arrange the hearts and squares into a 9-patch as shown below. Sew the squares into rows, pressing top seams to the right, middle to the left and bottom row to the right again.
Sew rows together. Your 9-patch is done! Now for the real fun!

Press well. Lay the quilt on a cutting mat and cut down the center of the middle blocks in both directions. Rotate the heart sections that are upside down.

Sew the 4 blocks together and you are done with your little quilt top. It should measure about 18” square.

I have already sandwiched this quilt and will machine quilt it with a simple wavy grid so I can use it right away!

If you enjoy this project and want to make a bigger quilt, you can simply make more sections!

Enjoy!
